I haven't listened to the podcast, but when I saw the various
discussions about this on Skype Journal, all I could do is roll my
eyes. The carriers will have to be awefully good to make
any impact against Skype's user base. And Skype is much more than
just a 'phone', which I doubt the carriers really get. The carriers
are gonna have to make something easier to use than Skype,
better/more-feature-rich than Skype, and most importantly
cheaper than Skype if they want to see any adoption of
their program at all. And I have a very hard time
they will deliver on that "cheaper" part...
And for those of you that come back with "standards based" --
the general populace has shown they couldn't give a rat's arse
about standards. They want something that "just works" -- something
that Skype does while SIP does not.
Not to say that competition for Skype wouldn't be a good thing,
BTW. Just that I have a very hard time believing that the legacy
carriers would pull it off.

That was very much the verdict on the call. Very hard for the carriers to innovate & then capture the customer base.
